Earlobe repair can be classified as:
Incomplete cleft – this is usually bilateral and frequently found in elderly women who have worn heavy earrings for many years
Full cleft – usually unilateral, caused by direct local trauma like sudden pulling of earrings
There is another way of classifying earlobe repair:
1. The cleft extension does not go beyond half the distance between the initial orifice and the lower border of the ear lobe
2. The cleft extension goes beyond half of the distance between the initial orifice and the lower ear lobe border
3. Progressive cleft extension until it becomes a complete defect.
Local anesthesia and a vasoconstrictor are used to treat most earlobe tears. Sutures are used to repair simple splits in the earlobe. This procedure can take up to an hour. The skin lining the tear is excised for droopy earlobes. Tears that do not reach the bottom of the earlobe should be treated right away.
Keloids, hypo/hyperpigmentation, and suture dehiscence are all possible side effects of earlobe repair in some people. Earlobe repairs cause very little pain if any at all. It is treatable with over-the-counter medications. It’s important to distinguish between ear lobe repair and otoplasty, or ear correction surgery.
