Chin Implant Gone Wrong | Chin Implant Complications | What do I need to know of before surgery?
Chin Implant Complications – What do I need to be aware of before getting the implant? Can they “slip” out of place?
Why does one need a chin Implant?
A chin implant is a synthetic material that is used to augment the chin area. Many times patients have retruded chin or deficient lower part of the face. A chin implant can help augment such a receding chin and add definition and contour to the lower part of the face improving the overall profile and the jawline.
Are there any alternatives to chin implants to enhance the lower part of the face?
Yes. Chin can be enhanced by a surgical procedure called Genioplasty. In this technique, the surgeon would cut the lower part of the chin bone, move it to a more forward position and then fix it there with the help of titanium screws and plates. This technique doesn’t utilize any foreign body to augment the chin, but definitely it more invasive surgically as compared to the implants.
How does the chin implant surgery perform?
The procedure can be performed under local anesthesia or mild sedation. General anesthesia is usually not required.
An incision is placed inside the mouth near the chin area. Some surgeons prefer to take a cut from outside on the skin that could leave a scar under the chin area. But it’s the surgeon’s and patients’ choice to choose the technique.
Instruments are used to reflect the tissues to expose the lower border of the chin while care is taken not to damage nerves and blood vessels lying in very close vicinity.
Once exposed, the silicone chin implant is placed and tried. Sometimes it’s important to modify the shape and size to fit the patient’s face.
Once satisfied, the implant is fixed with some screws to the bone. The wound is then closed with dissolvable stitches.
What are the risks of chin Implants?
Although chin implant surgery is a pretty straightforward procedure in experienced hands, sometimes certain inherent risks should be considered. These include but are not limited to :
- Burning or prickling sensation.
- Erosion or resorption of your chin bone.
- Hair loss near the incision (if the incision is on the outside of your chin).
- Implant extrusion (implant pokes through the incision).
- Implant rejection.
- Nerve injury.
- Shifted or misaligned implant.
