Botox Anti Wrinkle Treatment

What is BOTOX treatment?

Botulinum toxin is an exotoxin derived from the bacteria clostridium botulinum. It has a special effect of relaxing the peripheral muscles by inhibiting the release of acetylcholine which is a neurotransmitter and transmits the impulses for the muscles to contract. Although it was originally utilized for the treatment of strabismus, today it is one of the most popular aesthetic treatments performed worldwide. It relaxes the dynamic wrinkles that are found with the aging process. Injections of botulinum toxin directly into the muscles relax the unaesthetic wrinkles appearing as forehead lines, frown lines, crows feet, bunny lines, cobblestone appearance of chin, gummy smile and hypertrophied masseter. It is also utilized for various therapeutic conditions like trigeminal neuralgia, migraine, Frey’s syndrome, strabismus, blepharospasm, etc.

How is BOTOX treatment done?

Botulinum toxin is usually available as a freeze-dried powder in vacuum-sealed vials. Each vial contains 50 or 100 units of the toxin. They are usually stored at 2 degrees and are delivered in a cold chain to maintain the potency of the toxin. When it is to be used, the freeze-dried powder is reconstituted with normal saline and the required amount of units are withdrawn from the vial and injected in the area of requirement. Usually, it takes about 3 days for the results to be visible as that’s the time required for the toxin to disrupt the synaptosomal process.
