PRP therapy for Facial Rejuvenation

What is PRP therapy on Facial rejuvenation?

Platelet concentrate means plentiful amounts of platelets that are concentrated into a small volume of plasma. PRP or platelet-rich plasma is described as a biologic product derived from autologous blood with the plasma fraction containing platelets at a concentration of more than 3 to 5 times above baseline. Platelets contain growth factors that are necessary for wound healing. The scientific evidence suggests that wound healing enhancement is seen using concentrates of 10,00,000 platelets/μl. Any concentration lower than this cannot be depended on to enhance wound healing, and concentrations far more than this haven’t been scientifically proved to help and enhance healing.

So, PRP by virtue of its increased concentration of platelets and thereby an inflated amount of growth factors or cytokines have been theorized to encourage tissue repair and regeneration by neocollagenesis, neoangiogenesis, and much more. Today PRP therapy has become a very popular treatment for Facial rejuvenation due to its effectiveness, safety, and minimal or no complication rate.

How is PRP therapy for Facial rejuvenation performed?

Studies have shown that PRP by inducing neocollagenesis through activation of fibroblasts and by removing photodamaged extracellular matrix (ECM) components amplifies dermal elasticity and causes facial rejuvenation.

PRP is prepared by a double centrifuge technique in which autologous blood is taken with anticoagulants and spun down to separate the various cellular components of the blood in 2 steps to achieve an excellent platelet count. Once PRP is ready it can be injected into the face under local anesthetic or numbing cream depending upon the patient’s comfort. Multiple intradermal injections of PRP after activating it are given all over the face including the infraorbital area. 3 sessions each at a gap of 1 month of PRP therapy along with micro-needling (collagen induction therapy) with derma pen with needle depth of 0.7 to 1mm has been shown to give very good results for rejuvenating the aged skin and acne scars.

Dr. Arun does the careful clinical evaluation of the patient before suggesting the PRP therapy to the patient. If patient selection is right, aged facial skin responds very well and patients can expect excellent rejuvenation results.
