Facial Implant

What are Facial Implants?

Facial implants are synthetic man-made materials, which are highly biocompatible and are used to provide cosmetic definition to the face. Facial implant surgeries can be performed on various parts of the face like cheeks, chin, lower jawline, and angle, etc. These are performed in patients with facial deformities or in older patients who have lost the volume of fat from the face. These implants basically replace the lost volume and structure on the face. One of the most important indications is its use in patients with Parry Romberg syndrome where there is progressive atrophy of the soft tissues in half side of the face (hemifacial atrophy).

How are Facial Implants performed?

The surgical procedure is performed under general anesthesia. Incisions are placed usually from inside to mouth in the desired locations. There are no scars after surgery. Once tissues are raised, and the bone is exposed, the implant material is placed on the bone and is usually fixed in place using titanium screws. The wound is closed with sutures which are normally removed in 10 days. Patients are advised against any contact sports for an extended period of time.

What to expect after Facial Implant surgery?

Facial implant surgery is a highly satisfying facial cosmetic surgical procedure that replaces the lost volume. When performed in patients with hemifacial atrophy, it literally changes the facial appearance. Patients who get it done to replace the lost volume as in older age groups can also expect excellent long-term results in terms of aesthetics.

Decision making is very important in facial implant surgery. The amount of replacement, the type of implant, and many more factors play a vital role in deciding the surgery. Patients need to understand the outcomes and possible complications as these are foreign materials and there are chances of rejection. Once understanding is made, the patient is asked for investigations and medical clearance before surgery is finalized.
