DERMABRASION VS MICRODERMABRASION: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?, COST IN INDIA
WHAT IS MICRODERMABRASION?
Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive procedure that removes the upper layers of the skin through controlled physical exfoliation. Similar to dermabrasion, a microdermabrasion procedure uses a handheld device that is guided over the skin to provide light abrasion. The device also features a suction mechanism that removes sloughed-off skin as it passes.
Microdermabrasion targets dead (i.e. non-viable) skin cells while leaving viable skin alone. As such, microdermabrasion is not painful and requires minimal recovery time. Patients can expect their skin to feel renewed and refreshed immediately following treatment.
Microdermabrasion is a light cosmetic procedure that uses a mechanical medium for exfoliation to remove the outermost layer of dead skin cells from the epidermis. Most commonly, microdermabrasion uses two parts: an exfoliating material such as crystals or diamond flakes, and a machine-based suction to gently lift up the skin during exfoliation. It is a non-invasive procedure and may be performed in-office by a trained skin care professional.
Microdermabrasion is considered a relatively simple, easy, painless and non-invasive skin rejuvenation procedure. Typically there are no needles or anesthetics required for microdermabrasion. The vacuum pressure and speed are adjusted depending on the sensitivity and tolerance of the skin.
Microdermabrasion is often compared to the feeling of a cat licking the skin – a rough but gentle texture. Typical microdermabrasion sessions can last anywhere from 5 to 60 minutes. Minimal to no recovery time is required after microdermabrasion and most people immediately return to daily activity after a session. Makeup and non-irritating creams can usually be applied within a few hours or right after microdermabrasion. Since there is an often immediate increased minor skin sensitivity after microdermabrasion, irritating products such as glycolic acids, Alpha Hydroxy Acids, Retinoid products or fragranced creams and lotions are typically avoided right after the procedure.
Traditionally, a “crystal” microdermabrasion system includes a pump, a connecting tube, a hand piece, and a vacuum. While the pump creates a high-pressure stream of inert crystals (aluminum oxide, magnesium oxide, sodium chloride, or sodium bicarbonate) to abrade the skin, the vacuum removes the crystals and exfoliated skin cells. Alternatively, the inert crystals can be replaced by a roughened surface of the tip in the diamond microdermabrasion system.
Microdermabrasion may be performed to help diminish the appearance of superficial hyperpigmentation or photo-damage (sunburn), as well as diminish fine lines, wrinkles, acne, and shallow acne scars. A further benefit of microdermabrasion is enhanced skin penetration by skin creams and serums. Removing dead skin (stratum corneum of the epidermis) will aid in the penetration of skin care products and medications by up to 10-50%. The controlled skin exfoliation afforded by microdermabrasion will allow make-up and self-tanning products to go on much more smoothly.

While undergoing this process, you might wonder about the cost involved. WHAT IS DERMABRASION?
Dermabrasion is a controlled surgical method of removing the uppermost skin layers which triggers the growth of new youthful-looking skin. During dermabrasion, a handheld device is used to peel away layers of the skin. This device features a rotating wheel layered with wire brushes that physically exfoliates the skin similar to sanding wood.
Dermabrasion is fairly invasive and requires the use of local or general anesthesia. Depending on patient needs, the procedure can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours to complete.
Most dermabrasion patients can expect a fairly long recovery period, typically 10-14 days depending on the degree of resurfacing done. During this period most patients will experience moderate pain which can be controlled using pain medication. The skin will also remain red/pink, swollen, and irritated throughout the healing period.
Dermabrasion is a skin-resurfacing procedure that uses a rapidly rotating device to sand the outer layers of skin. Immediately after dermabrasion, treated skin will be reddish and swollen. The skin that grows back is usually smoother.
Dermabrasion is a more aggressive technique than microdermabrasion, and it erases significantly more wrinkles or scars. Therefore, dermabrasion does cause bleeding, while microdermabrasion does not. There is downtime with dermabrasion while microdermabrasion resolves without any downtime.
Dermabrasion can be used to treat or remove:
- Scars are caused by acne, surgery, or injuries.
- Fine wrinkles, especially those around the mouth.
- Sun-damaged skin, including age spots.
- Tattoos.
- Swelling and redness of the nose (rhinophyma)
- Potentially precancerous skin patches.

After dermabrasion, treated skin will be red and swollen. Swelling will begin to decrease within a few days to one week, but might last for weeks or even months. Your new skin will be sensitive and blotchy for several weeks. It might take about three months for your skin tone to return to normal.
What is the price of dermabrasion treatment in India?
The cost of Dermabrasion is between 20-30k
The new skin after the procedure of dermabrasion is usually swollen and red. The new skin is also sensitive to sunlight and it is known for a fact that you can gradually start to continue your normal day-to-day activities. You should give time for your new skin to heal and avoid sunlight thus you can have exposure to sunlight in about 2 weeks.
After the dermabrasion procedure, the doctors advise the patients to avoid consuming alcohol for 3 to 4 weeks and it is also advised that they do not have direct contact with chlorinated water on their faces directly for at least a month. However, you must always keep in touch with your dermatologist to be fully sure about the healing process as it is important for your new skin to grow back the pigments that it lost.
